Canva Features – 101 & Beyond

So you’ve been using Canva for a little while now, but you’re still not sure how to use all of its features. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Canva is a powerful design tool with a lot to offer, but it can be a little overwhelming at first. I liked to say “it’s easy once you know”…(like anything).

I’m here to share some of my favourite Canva features with you, so you can start creating amazing designs like a pro.

1. Templates

When it comes to getting started in Canva – templates are a great way to go. They provide a pre-made layout and design elements, so you can just add your own text and images, stickers or videos to create a professional-looking design in minutes.

Canva has a wide variety of templates to choose from, for everything from social media posts to presentations to flyers. So whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned designer, there’s a template out there for you.

Most Canva templates are designed by professionals and can serve as a helpful starting point when you’re not sure how to structure your design. They provide a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing look, ensuring that your design looks polished and visually appealing.

2. Elements

Canva has a huge library of elements to choose from, including graphics, shapes, videos, fonts, stickers and more. You can use these elements to add your own unique touch to your designs.

If you’re looking for something specific, you can use the search bar under Elements to find it. You can also use the Canva assistant (bottom right) to find something. If you’re feeling creative, you can browse the different categories to see what catches your eye.

Elements can enhance the visual impact of your design by adding visual interest and reinforcing your message. Whether you need icons, illustrations, or decorative elements, Canva has a vast collection to choose from.

3. Backgrounds

Backgrounds can really set the tone for your design. Canva has a wide variety of backgrounds to choose from, including solid colours, patterns, gradients and textures.

You can use backgrounds to create a sense of depth or to add a pop of colour to your design. Or, if you’re feeling really creative, you can upload your own background image.

Choosing the right background can help create the desired atmosphere and mood for your design. It can enhance the overall visual appeal and make your design stand out.

4. Text

Text is an important part of any design. Canva has a variety of fonts to choose from, so you can find the perfect font for your project.

You can also use Canva to add effects to your text, such as drop shadows, outlines, and gradients. This can help your text stand out from the background and add a touch of personality to your design.

Typography plays a significant role in conveying your message effectively. With Canva’s extensive font library and customisation options, you can experiment with different font styles, sizes, and effects to create visually appealing text that complements your design.

If you really want to jazz-it-up, you can even animate your text!

5. Shapes

Shapes can be used to add visual interest to your design. Canva has a variety of shapes to choose from, including squares, circles, triangles, pentagons, stars and many more.

You can use shapes to create borders, frames, and even patterns. Or, you can use them to create your own unique designs.

Shapes can be employed to create visual hierarchy, guide the viewer’s attention, or add structure to your design. With Canva’s expansive and diverse collection of shapes, and the ability to customise them, you can unleash your creativity and incorporate unique design elements.

6. Stickers

Stickers are fun wee animations that add a touch of personality to your designs. Canva has a variety of stickers to choose from, including emojis, animals, shapes, food, confetti and other objects.

You can use stickers to add humour, your own personality or emphasis to your design. Or, you can even use them to create a more professional look.

Stickers can bring a sense of playfulness and creativity to your design. They can be used to convey emotions, highlight key elements, or simply add a decorative touch that reflects your personal style.

7. Videos

Did you know that Canva lets you add videos to your designs? This is a great way to add a dynamic element to your project and stand out from the crowd.

You can use videos to create a slideshow, add a background to your design, or even create a dynamic presentation.

The inclusion of videos in your designs can take your creativity to the next level. It allows you to incorporate motion, storytelling, and visual interest, making your designs more engaging and impactful.

8. Collaboration

Canva makes it easy to collaborate with others on your designs. You can invite others to view or edit your designs, even if they don’t have a Canva account.

This is a great way to get feedback on your designs or to work with others on a project.

Collaboration is a key aspect of design, as it allows you to gather different perspectives, exchange ideas, and improve the overall quality of your work. Canva’s collaboration features enable seamless teamwork, making it easier to share and receive feedback, and ultimately create better designs.

9. Publishing

Once you’re finished with your design, you can publish it to a variety of platforms, including social media, websites, and presentations.

You can also download your design as a PDF, PNG, or JPG file – even Powerpoint! Yes really!

Publishing your design is the final step in sharing your work with the world. Whether you want to showcase it on social media, incorporate it into a website, or present it in a professional setting, Canva offers various publishing options to suit your needs.
