Canva Just Went Hollywood…and I Got Distracted
Hey everyone, have you seen the latest Canva update? It’s called Create a Video Clip and it’s powered by Google’s fancy new VEO3 model. It dropped midweek, right in the thick of my busiest week of Canva training, and yep, I got totally distracted.
I was supposed to be working on my slides for a workshop in Edinburgh, but instead I ended up losing a solid three hours playing with this new feature. Whoops.
So What Is It?
This shiny new feature lets Canva Pro users create short AI-generated video clips based on text prompts. Think: “time-travelling corgi in a rocketship” or “80s superhero mum in a retro living room full of VHS tapes”. That kind of thing.
I’ve been watching fellow Canva Verified Experts like Ronny, Hadas and Roger create absolute magic with it in just hours. Seriously impressive stuff. (Note: Those links will take you directly to their videos on Linkedin – go watch after you finish reading here)…
How to Try Canva’s Create a Video Clip Tool
- Head to canva.com/ai
- Click on Canva AI (above the big main search box)
- Select Create a Video Clip
- Type your prompt (e.g. “Time-travelling corgi in a rocketship”)
Then, if you didn’t already include these in your prompt, you can customise:
- Style: Cinematic, Photorealistic, 3D Render, Animated, Cartoon, Vintage Film, VHS Style, Black and White, Cyberpunk, Surreal/Dreamlike
- Aspect Ratio: Only 16:9 for now (but 9:16 is coming)
- Duration: Default is 8 seconds – custom is on the way
- Framing: Wide Shot, Medium Shot, Closeup, Over-the-Shoulder, POV, Top-Down
- Lighting: Soft Lighting, Hard Lighting, Dark Lighting, Golden Hour, Cool Night Light
Then just hit the little arrow in the bottom right and let the AI work its movie magic.
Use Your Prompts Wisely
You get five prompts per month, so don’t waste them. They’ll vanish faster than your morning coffee. I actually found a Custom GPT on Chat GPT that is designed specifically for VEO3. Message me for that link if you can’t find it yourself.

Here are a few of my early attempts. I tried to create a short promo for my analogue to digital service – Totally Content Tape Transfers. They didn’t come out perfectly (file under: close but no cigar), but even with its quirks, they got a few smiles. See what you think.
