What Do You Think of Clubhouse App? Have You Heard About It?
The Clubhouse App had not been on my radar until a few weeks ago when Joanna from Savvy Chic posted on our Canva ambassador’s group. After she posted, many fellow CCCs jump onto her thread about getting on to talk Canva. Loved the idea and got excited to join in, until I hopped over to the Play store and found there was no Android version. I grumbled to myself, then sent a grumpy tweet and moved on…For a few days at any rate – until I thought “maybe I can use it on my iPad”. (Spoiler alert: yes, you can!)
What Is Clubhouse?
Before I go further, let’s talk about what it is. Clubhouse is an invite-only, drop in audio iPhone app that officially launched in March of 2020. It’s still in its ‘beta phase’ which is why it’s by invitation only.
If you have an IOS device, you can go register you name to claim it right now regardless of having an invite yet. It’s a casual, voice-only social network. Though it’s been going for quite awhile, it really started to ramp up in popularity at the end of 2020.
What I Like About It
1.Coming from a radio background, I love that it is voice-only, (“Face for radio” and all that but also means I can go roll out of bed, hair unkempt and makeup-free etc).
2. To me Clubhouse is like a live form of podcasting. I keep meaning to podcast, but it’s just so much effort to record, edit, promote etc.
3. The platform is like a global house party, so you can just walk in and out of any rooms to find your tribe. I like to network anyway. This way, it’s globally.
4. There are people on it, from all four corners of the globe, who share your industry, interests, visions – anything and everything.
5. It’s inclusive, people have been fairly kind on it, and there is lots of knowledge being shared.
6. You will come across people who you would not come into contact with otherwise. The bottom line: You can literally find likeminded people – no matter what you’re interested in. I’ve joined rooms to hear from industry leaders, such as Harley Finkelstein (President of Shopify), Scott Jordan (Founder of Scottevest – which I’m a big fan of!), and Michael Stelzner (Social Media Examiner) too.
7. To find people to follow, click the magnifying glass and search their name or for a topic (e.g. Canva). The other way is when you’re in a room, click on the person’s face to read their bio and decide whether you want to follow them.
Any Downside to the Clubhouse App?
So far there’s not a lot about Clubhouse that I don’t really like but there are a few niggles. First and foremost, as I mentioned, there is no Android version as of yet. About a week after hearing about it, it occurred to me to see if it was on the iPad. That’s how I use it.
It is addictive and can be a total time suck. (So be careful). It creates a FOMO (fear of missing out) mentality so you end up staying on longer.
Clubhouse can feel a bit high-school-ish (clic-ish) or make you feel back if people don’t follow you back. (That may just be my insecure 16 year old self talking though).
It took quite a while to find relevant people to follow.
The bios are actually a bit too long. It kind of becomes information overload. You can have a few different versions of your bio where you can change it to emphasise different aspects of your experience depending on the room you’re in. So if I am hosting an ’80s channel I might want to highlight that. Or in the event I am hosting a Canva room, that would be the area I want to accentuate.
A Few Things to Know
- As a newbie you will have a “party hat” (or popper) under your icon for the first week. Once you get passed that, you lose it.
- A room is like a conference room, complete with speakers and delegates.
- You can leave any room that doesn’t interest you by clicking “leave quietly” at the bottom.
- Depending on the room. you may be invited to be a speaker and “take the stage”. You can opt not to until you’re ready. Or you can raise your hand to be invited to speak. (Keep your mic muted until it is your turn).
- If you like something someone says you can turn your mic off and on fast to “applaud” them. (I had no idea what that meant!)
- There’s a plus sign at the bottom next to the raise hand which allows you to “ping in” someone to join the room.
- You can tell who’s speaking by a circle around their head (to may it’s way too faint and I often can’t tell who’s speaking).
- You get invites to send to people to get them to join. Use them wisely. Think about people who would actually both use and add value to the community. As you join rooms, engage or set up your own rooms on Clubhouse, you get more invites to share with friends and colleagues. So do participate!
- The Android App is said to be coming (I had heard in the next 4-6 months on one of the Clubhouse rooms). For now, try an iPad if you have one.
- Clubhouse rooms are always live. Once they’re done, they disappear.
- The app is currently free, but after their billion dollar valuation, they’ll be looking for ways to monetize the platform. (Lots of talk around “tipping, tickets and subscriptions”).
What Do You Think?
So what do you think about Clubhouse? Is it something you’re going to be investing your time and energy in building? Or do you think it’s a passing fad that won’t live up to its billion dollar valuation? It’s still early days for me on the platform so I am thinking “to what end?” How can I best use Clubhouse for both raising personal brand awareness and simply for pleasure as well?
